I bet not many people watch dental YouTube videos or blog posts just for fun.
Everyone has some kind of dental issue,
and honestly, I'm no different.
I don't get cavities easily, but my gums swell up from time to time and feel uncomfortable, so
I receive regular care that includes gum disinfection and scaling.
Whether it's cavity treatment or gum treatment, what worries me most is
that it's going to hurt at the dentist. T_T How much is it going to hurt? T_T
This is something I feel very strongly about.
I have nowhere to go for treatment.
To be more precise, there are places that can do the treatment, but there's no place I can trust with the anesthesia.
After all, I'm only human, and I'm scared of pain and hate it. haha
That's why a perfect anesthetic, one that numbs you painlessly so you feel nothing at all during treatment, has been my dream and a goal I absolutely had to achieve.
I tried all kinds of methods and got some results of my own, but...
In 2016, I met a true godsend.
The CEO of a French dental equipment company (a Frenchman) had imported an anesthesia device that was getting a great response in France, and they chose me as the very first user in Korea.
At the time, that French company was also very interested in natural tooth preservation and was importing related equipment and materials. I think they saw that I was actively giving lectures and publishing books on tooth preservation, and judged me to be the right person.
It was an extremely expensive piece of equipment, but they readily brought it over, encouraged me to try it, and showed me how it worked...
I immediately thought, 'This is it!' and once I actually tried it, I was simply amazed.
It was like
a young woman from Ulleungdo who loves luxury brands (this is not a dig at Ulleungdo!)
walking into the Shinsegae Department Store in Gangnam for the first time in her life and actually stepping inside the Hermès, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton boutiques. That's kind of the feeling, I guess?
I handled the device from every angle and read through the training materials they gave me carefully, but
still, there's only so far you can get on your own, so I flew straight to France, where the experts are.

Honestly, anesthesia still isn't a field that gets much attention in Korea,
but in France I got to study dental anesthesia in such depth and across so many topics that two days weren't nearly enough.
They had prepared for every imaginable situation, right down to the scenarios.
As it turned out, it was the work of a company founded by a father and son, both dentists, who had obsessively researched this anesthetic method and its equipment for nearly 50 years.
When I was doing it on my own, some things worked well, but there were others I struggled with,
but taking the master course cleared all of those up, and I was really glad I made the trip.

I believe dental treatment shouldn't hurt, whether you're saving a natural tooth or getting an implant.
Anesthesia should set in gradually, seeping in so smoothly that you can't even tell when it started,
and once the numbing is thorough enough that you feel nothing during treatment,
dental treatment is no longer a frightening ordeal.
What I find most rewarding
is not only when I save a tooth that even university hospitals said couldn't be saved, though that happens too,
but when a patient stands up after treatment is over and asks, 'Did you even give me anesthesia today?'
As the Pangyo clinic approaches its second anniversary, I'm organizing a lot of things in preparation for moving on to 'Chapter 2.'
Looking back at the YouTube videos and blog posts I've shared so far, some things went well,
but I'm also aware of how much I fell short, especially in not showing and explaining things the way I should have.
I also need to share the tooth-preservation materials I have with all of you. There's a lot to do.
While I was digging through everything, I came across the certificate I received in Paris, and I was so happy to see it that I wanted to share it with you! ^^
