Cracked teeth are often recommended for extraction in Korea, but cracked tooth replantation offers a way to try saving the tooth. This post explains both options.

Title: 2 ways to handle a cracked tooth deemed untreatable. An extracted tooth with an arrow marking a root crack, next to a dentist.

This is about cracked teeth, a nightmare for both dentists and patients.

If you take a close look at the arrow in the featured photo, you can see the crack.

If you're reading this post right now, it's probably because you've been working hard on treating a crack, but the problem still hasn't been resolved.

If a cracked tooth had been treated successfully, you wouldn't need to be reading this post at all.

This post is for patients who were diagnosed with a crack and received root canal treatment, but since it didn't get resolved, they feel stuck and don't know which way to turn.

Extract the tooth.

2. Confirm through replantation, then treat the crack.

Those are the two options.

There's no need to overthink it.

Many dental schools in Korea teach that when a crack is found in a tooth, the tooth should be extracted right away.

Dentists who received this training naturally recommend extracting cracked teeth, just as they were taught in school.

If you agree, extraction ends the matter right there.

If you'd like to try saving the cracked tooth, you can opt for "cracked tooth replantation."

This is a treatment in which the cracked tooth is extracted, the crack is examined outside the mouth, and the crack is then treated with bonding.

This isn't a method I developed myself; I learned it in Japan 10 years ago.

This post is not telling you to save your cracked tooth!

Since Korean dental schools consider cracks untreatable and teach extraction, extraction is a valid choice.

Japan has more than 40 years of history in cracked tooth treatment, so if you prefer that approach, you can try treating the cracked tooth.

Either path is fine, as long as you choose the one that suits you.

A crack is an extremely unfortunate situation that both patients and dentists want to avoid.

That said, stalling won't fix anything.

In fact, if you keep up ineffective treatment for a crack you already know is there, the crack will only grow. It will never shrink.

I see so many people suffering both mentally and physically because of cracks, and it breaks my heart, which is why I wrote this post.

Frequently Asked Questions

What treatment options are available when a tooth develops a crack?

There are two realistic options: extraction or replantation. In Korea, extraction is generally recommended as the standard treatment when a cracked tooth is found. If you want to preserve the tooth, you can try replantation, in which the tooth is extracted, the crack is bonded, and the tooth is placed back in the mouth.

Why do dentists often recommend immediate extraction for cracked teeth?

Most dental schools in Korea teach that cracked teeth are untreatable. As a result, many dentists first recommend extraction, following the principles they learned.

How is cracked tooth replantation performed?

The tooth is extracted from the mouth, the crack is examined and bonded, and the tooth is then placed back in its socket. This approach follows Japan's cracked tooth treatment, which has more than 40 years of history, and it is one way to attempt tooth preservation.

What happens if a cracked tooth is left untreated?

A crack never gets smaller over time, and it tends to grow larger. Continuing ineffective treatment and delaying a decision can worsen the condition, so you should choose between extraction and replantation based on your own situation.
